Installing Avellin on Blogger

Install the Avellin XML template safely, back up your current Blogger theme, and confirm the base layout before customizing it.

Avellin is a Blogger XML theme. Install the template first, then do the design and content setup from Blogger Layout and Theme Designer.

Before you start

  • Download and unzip your Avellin package.
  • Locate the final Avellin.xml file.
  • Make a backup of your current Blogger theme.
  • Keep an untouched copy of Avellin.xml somewhere safe.

Step 1: Back up the current theme

  1. Open Blogger.
  2. Go to Theme.
  3. Use the theme menu to download a backup.
  4. Save the backup before uploading Avellin.

Step 2: Upload Avellin

  1. Stay in Theme.
  2. Choose the restore/upload option.
  3. Select Avellin.xml.
  4. Wait for Blogger to finish applying the template.

Step 3: Check the public site

Open the blog in a new tab. Confirm that the masthead, navigation, homepage featured recipe area, category row, post grid, lower homepage sections and footer are present.

Step 4: Open Layout

Go to Layout. Avellin exposes the Header, Navigation, Theme Options, Featured Recipe Settings, recipe category images, sidebar, homepage lower sections and footer widgets there.

Recommended setup order

  1. Set the site title/logo and description.
  2. Build the navigation.
  3. Configure Theme Options.
  4. Create your recipe labels.
  5. Configure the featured recipe and homepage categories.
  6. Create the Recipe Index page.
  7. Update the lower homepage sections, newsletter, sidebar and footer.
  8. Adjust fonts, colors and spacing in Theme Designer.

If the uploaded site looks structurally wrong before you have edited anything, stop and verify that the final Avellin.xml was uploaded successfully. It is much easier to solve installation problems before adding twenty-seven widgets and a heroic quantity of optimism.
