Tips

Before you install: what a clean installation does

A clean installation replaces the current Blogger theme code completely. It removes all widgets from the previous theme, so copy or note any widget content you want to keep before you begin. Your published posts and pages remain untouched.

A few good habits make theme setup easier, reduce accidental breakage, and save a remarkable amount of time spent wondering which tiny change caused the page to revolt.

Start with a clean installation

For the cleanest setup when replacing an existing Blogger theme:

  1. Open the Millenia Vista theme’s XML file in a text editor and copy all of the code.
  2. In Blogger, go to Theme → Edit HTML.
  3. Select all of the existing theme code and delete it.
  4. Paste the complete code you copied from the XML file.
  5. Save the theme.

Keep a backup before major changes

Before replacing a theme or making larger custom edits, download a copy of your current theme. It gives you a safe version to return to if you change your mind.

Use Theme Designer first

When you want to change colors, fonts, widths or other supported design settings, use Blogger → Theme → Customize before editing the theme code. It is safer and easier to undo.

Use labels consistently

Labels can control categories, featured content and recipe organization. Decide on a small, clear set of labels and use the same spelling and capitalization consistently.

Prepare images before uploading

Use good-quality images, but avoid unnecessarily huge files. Properly sized and compressed images help pages load faster while still looking sharp.

Keep navigation simple

Prioritize the pages and categories visitors need most. A shorter, deliberate menu is usually easier to use than a navigation bar trying to contain the entire history of the internet.

Keep a copy of custom HTML

If you use one of the supplied About, Contact, Recipe or Recipe Index templates, keep a clean copy before editing it. That makes it easy to compare or start again later.

Update carefully

Keep your original theme download and note any custom code you add yourself. When a new theme version is released, check the update notes before replacing your current copy.

Use clear titles and image descriptions

Descriptive post titles, useful excerpts and meaningful image alt text make content easier for readers to understand and help search engines interpret the page.

When a feature is theme-specific

Use the documentation for the theme you are working with. Élan and Avellin have different layouts and different setup options, so their detailed instructions intentionally stay separate.
